PTFE / Phenolic Fabrics

Engineering - Terms & Definitions

Below are some useful terms and definitions related to Fenner Precision's low friction fabrics:

Denier - The weight in grams of 9,000 meters of the yarn.

dTex - The weight in grams of 10,000 meters of the yarn.

Epoxy Resin - A polyether resin formed originally by the polymerization of bisphenol A and epichlorohydrin, having high strength, and low shrinkage during curing; used as a coating, adhesive, casting, or foam.

Fenlon - Fenner Precision's trade name for its range low-friction fabrics

Nomex - Dupont's registered trade name for its range of Para-aramid fibers

Phenolic Resin - Any of various synthetic thermosetting resins, obtained by the reaction of phenols with simple aldehydes and used to make molded products and as coatings and adhesives.

Plain Weave - Plain weave is the most basic of the three fundamental types of textile weaves. It is strong and hardwearing, used for fashion and furnishing fabrics. In plain weave the warp and weft are aligned so that they form a simple crisscross pattern. Each weft thread crosses the warp threads by going over one, then under the next, and so on. The next weft thread goes under the warp threads that its neighbor went over, and vice versa. Plain weave is also known as "tabby weave" or "taffeta weave."

Polyimide Resin - An aromatic polyimide made by reacting pyromellitic dianhydride with an aromatic diamine; has high resistance to thermal stresses; used to make components of internal combustion engines.

Satin Weave - Is characterized by four or more fill or weft yarns floating over a warp yarn or vice versa, four warp yarns floating over a single weft yarn. This explains the "floatiness" of the appearance.

Sateen Weave - The fabric is a satin if Nylon or silk are used as the filament yarns, but if shorter or staple yarns are used, the fabric is then called Sateen. The float is in the horizontal or filling direction with this weave.

Teflon - Dupont's registered trade name for its range of PTFE products
